How to Apply

We’re so excited that you’re interested in being a part of Lawless!

This is a unique project, but we’ll keep the process as simple and transparent as possible.

Here’s how this works:

  1. You apply to be an author on the project.
  2. If you’re accepted, the managing editor will talk with you and assign a particular story from the book of Judges that will be the inspiration for your story.
  3. All of the stories will be set in the same universe. The editor will provide detailed information about the universe, so that you can utilize that information for your story.
  4. AFTER YOU ARE ACCEPTED AND WORK WITH THE MANAGING EDITOR, then you write the story, inspired by your assigned judge. You write in your own narrative voice and style.
  5. You work with our editor to make the story the best that it can be and ensure that it fits seamlessly with the other stories in the book.

The first step is applying to be included in the project. It’s pretty easy!

You’ll need to create a free account on The Company’s website at Then you’ll fill out the simple application form and provide a sample of your writing.

Your sample can be a short story, novel chapter, or vignette. All of the stories in Lawless will be set in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian universe, so providing a sample that’s close to that mark is helpful, but not required.

There is no cost to apply.

Applications close on September 11, 2023. At that time, our editorial team will select the authors to be included and reach out with more details.

Applications will open on August 14, 2023. To apply, simply follow these steps:

  1. Create a free membership account at Writers.Company
  2. Fill out the application. Applications open on August 14th. Sign up for updates so you don’t miss out!
  3. Provide a sample of your writing. It’s not required, but it’s helpful if your sample is closer to the genre and universe of the Lawless
  4. We’ll reach out after September 11 to finalize details with the selected authors.

Applications will open on August 14, 2023. Until then, you can stay in the loop by joining the mailing list.

We would love for you to apply to this project. Don’t be intimidated, you have nothing to lose by throwing your hat in the ring.

When you’re selected for the project, you’ll be asked to sign a publishing agreement.

This agreement is a short, simple document that specifies your rights as the author, as well as what rights you’re granting the publisher.

You’re not giving up any rights or obligated to do anything until you sign that publishing agreement. There is no risk to apply to the project.

Here are the most important parts of the contract:

  1. You’re granting non-exclusive rights to publish your story. That means that 12 months after publication, you can also publish the story somewhere else.
  2. You’ll be paid an advance of $35, plus 1% royalty.
  3. The book will be published by The Pearl’s book publishing division. The Pearl ( is a partner of The Company (, and will be supported in production, distribution, and marketing by The Company.
  4. You give The Pearl the right to make editorial and design decisions regarding how the book is published. However, you’ll be given the opportunity to review and approve all editorial changes.
  5. You’ll be able to buy copies of the book for yourself (including books you’d like to resell) at a deep discount.
  6. We ask you to make a good faith effort to assist with the marketing of the book, but there are no specific requirements for you to do so.

To reiterate, there is no risk in applying to the project. Prior to publication, you’ll be given a publishing agreement to sign, but until then, you retain all rights to your work. You may ask questions and negotiate the agreement at that time.
